Learn To Give Way In A Fucking Parking Lot

“What the hell?” You’re saying… “Why do I need to be told how to turn into a parking lot?!”

Well, there’s one reason:

You don’t fucking know how to do it!

Trust us, we’d much rather just go about our merry way, and not write posts for those of you who can’t seem to figure out how traffic patterns in parking lots work. But there are a lot (and we mean a LOT) of you who haven’t figured this out

Here’s the gist of it:

Cars Entering the Parking Lot Have the Right-Of-Way

If you figure this one thing out, the rest of it will be a breeze.

Why?” you ask. (You would ask that.) “Why do cars entering the parking lot have the right-of-way?” Well, it’s because they’re entering the lot from the road. And there are many more cars on the road, with a much greater need to keep traffic flowing, than in the lot.

What does this mean in practice?

All cars currently in the lot must stop, while cars entering the lot do not have to. If you’re already in the lot, crossing a lane that’s entering the lot, you must give way to those cars. That’s why you have a stop sign and they don’t.

How to Tell If You Have the Right-Of-Way in a Parking Lot

  • Did you just enter from a main road?
If you answered “Yes,” then you have the right of way.

Now… please don’t let us see you cutting in front of the cars entering the lot, or assuming they have to stop. In fact, here’s a little piece of bonus wisdom:

Just because you have a stop sign doesn’t mean everyone does

Look at the other corners. Do they have signs?  No? Then they don’t have to stop.

Okay – are we clear on this?

Good.
